GFWC - GFWC Volunteers in Action in November 2007

GFWC Volunteers in Action in November 2007

November 1, 2007

GFWC clubwomen continue to demonstrate their commitment to volunteer service through their ongoing work in our six core departments, plus the particular programs and projects that are of unique interest. There’s no doubt that GFWC has much to be thankful for this month!

If you’re looking for interesting new project ideas, review this list of holidays, observances, and events. Be creative when developing new projects, and remember to let us know what your club is doing to enhance the lives of others through volunteer service!

Nov. 1 is National Author’s Day, which was first observed in 1929 by GFWC and made an official day of celebration by the U.S. Department of Commerce in 1949. It’s commemorated every year on November 1, and the resolution states “by celebrating an Authors’ Day as a nation, we would encourage and inspire others to give of themselves in making a better America...” Celebrate authors in your community by inviting a local author to your club meeting for a book reading and/or signing; encourage young adults to enter GFWC’s poetry and short story writing contests; consider becoming part of GFWC’s Epsilon Sigma Omicron reading society; or write your own novel!

Nov. 5-9 is Pursuit of Happiness Week, where we remember the words of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, guaranteeing all people “certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Find ways to bring happiness to your community, and involve students and other volunteer groups to spread the sunshine with you!

Nov. 13 is World Kindness Day and Nov. 12-16 is World Kindness Week. Share some kindness in your community, and learn how to get kids in on the caring.

Nov. 12–18 is National Children’s Book Week, a great time to help introduce young people to new authors and ideas in schools, libraries, homes, and bookstores. Consider a project related to GFWC's literacy and education programs. Hold readings at your local library of your favorite autumn or Thanksgiving stories; challenge children to read as many hours as they watch television; hold a book drive to help more kids read more books!

Nov. 19-24 is National Game and Puzzle Week, so pull out those board games and interact with your family, friends, fellow clubwomen, and community neighbors. The Million Minute Family Challenge is a great place to start—the goal is to encourage at least 1,000 families or groups in each of the 50 states (that’s 50,000 families/groups) to play a board game together for at least 20 minutes (that’s 1,000,000 minutes) from September through December.
