World Day for Cultural Diversity

May 21, 2008

May 21 marks the commemoration of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. This day, founded by the United Nations of Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), was created with the purpose of creating a better understanding, acceptance, and appreciation among different cultures worldwide. UNESCO believes the path to peace can be found through simple dialogue among different cultures.

This day was created in November 2001, shortly after the events of 9/11. Many UN leaders believed that with a better understanding of others’ cultures, such tragedies could be avoided in the future. May 21 is an opportunity for people around the world to make an attempt to educate themselves on a different culture, in an attempt to understand one another and live together in a more peaceful setting.

Main Goals for World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development 2008

• Create a better understanding of what cultural diversity means and how to achieve it
• Teach people throughout the world to live in peace with one another
• Create awareness about the importance of understanding and accepting the cultures of others
• Demonstrate the usefulness in communicating with others for a goal of better understanding one another

Diversity Day events are often celebrated through art, such as interpretive dance, paintings, and photos. These demonstrations show the differences, similarities, and overall beauty in each culture.

UNESCO believes that cultural diversity is a tool that will bring every culture together, ultimately strengthening humanity as a whole. Understanding of others’ cultures can be achieved every day, and World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is an opportunity for a celebration of our world’s diversity.
