![It’s WHRC Wednesday! We’re getting very close to Convention, where our members will enjoy GFWC traditions old and new. One of those older customs was the singing of “America the Beautiful,” which was part of our meetings from at least 1918 into the 1970s. In fact, at the 1922 Biennial Meeting in Chautauqua, New York, we resolved to make it our official song – with an added motion to be sure we were crediting the author by name: Katherine Lee Bates (1859-1929). Bates was an author, journalist, and English professor who was also well-known for her work in various progressive causes. Inspired by the landscapes she saw on a cross-country train trip from Massachusetts to Colorado in 1893, as well as by her hopes for an egalitarian, inclusive America, she wrote four stanzas of “America; A Poem for July 4.” It was published widely, and over the next few years was turned into a song using as many as 75 different tunes. The music that stuck, that we sing today, is a melody written by Samuel A. Ward in 1882; Bates’ words and Ward’s music were combined in 1910. Though Im not sure she belonged to any particular woman’s club, Bates was at least in the GFWC orbit; she wrote an article on “Literature in Relation to Life” for our magazine in 1895, and we twice published her first-person account of how she came to write her most famous poem. The second time was shortly after her death, when our magazine editor noted, “The heart of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs is bowed down. It has lost one of its greatest sources of inspiration, Katharine Lee Bates, author of [our] official hymn… Shortly before her passing Miss Bates had given the magazine permission to print her own story of how she came to write this, the most beautiful of all her many exquisite poems.” Whats your favorite GFWC Convention tradition? Turn Awareness into Action for Mental Health
Every year since 1949, when Mental Health America founded Mental Health Awareness Month in May, GFWC has been at the forefront promoting public awareness activities to educate the masses on this prevalent and ever evolving health concern.
Mental health affects everyone in one degree or another on a personal level. You may experience a mental health crisis due to any significant life occurrence(s) or maybe you have a family member who has been personally impacted.
Regardless of your personal experience with mental health illnesses, let`s collectively rally to do all we can to educate the public about the importance of taking care of one another and let`s advocate to remove the stigma associated with it.
Visit the @Mental Health America to learn more on this subject and how you too can become an advocate of action. For more information on activities, visit: https://mhanational.org/mental-health-month/action-guide/
Also, don`t forget to checkout The Yellow Tulip Project, founded by Julia Hansen and her mother Suzanne Fox, GFWC Honorary Chairman. The organization`s purpose is to let people know that "Hope Happens" and we need to come together as a community to smash the stigma surrounding mental health disorders.
