![Its WHRC Wednesday! Were in the middle of both National Volunteer Week and National Park Week - a perfect day to look back at some of the early volunteer efforts of GFWC members who worked to set aside parkland for the future. Though we were interested in forest preservation from our early days, it was Mary Belle King Sherman (1862-1935) of Chicago who really brought National Parks into the GFWC picture. In 1909, the Sherman family began spending part of the year in Estes Park, Colorado for their health. Mary Sherman, a parliamentary law professor and member of womens clubs in Chicago and Estes Park, saw a way for clubwomen to become active in the national parks movement. She served as Chairman of the GFWC Conservation Department from 1914 to 1920, and while she herself worked on the creation of Rocky Mountain National Park, she also urged her fellow club members to support it and other parks through education and legislation. She attended the dedication of Rocky Mountain in January 1915 and went on to help form five other national parks, including the Grand Canyon, before her term as GFWC Conservation Chairman ended. She was thus known as the National Park Lady, although her work with GFWC also encompassed forests and gardens, home economics work, international relations, and parliamentary expertise. (She went on to serve as GFWC President, 1924-1928.) Shermans passion influenced GFWCs legislative work - our resolutions included support for many individual parks, as well as the formation of the National Park Service itself in 1916 - and the path of our conservation efforts by encouraging our members, and their families, to believe that Americas scenic beauty should be preserved for the future. As she wrote in the Conservation Departments Outline of Work in 1914, I wish that every woman would stop to realize that she has a share in the ownership of our [then only] fourteen National Parks. They belong to you and to me and to the generations to come. Let us learn all we can of our natural scenic possessions, and let us share in the work of getting our National Parks ready for the traveler... [so that] the lives of millions of people will be benefited, physically, mentally and morally. 📷Mary Belle King Sherman, from June 1916 issue of General Federation of Womens Clubs Magazine

It's WHRC Wednesday! We're in the middle of both National Volunteer Week and National Park Week – a perfect day to look back at some of the early volunteer efforts of GFWC members who worked to set aside parkland for the future. Though we were interested in forest preservation from our early days, it was Mary Belle King Sherman (1862-1935) of Chicago who really brought National Parks into the GFWC picture.
In 1909, the Sherman family began spending part of the year in Estes Park, Colorado for their health. Mary Sherman, a parliamentary law professor and member of women's clubs in Chicago and Estes Park, saw a way for clubwomen to become active in the national parks movement. She was thus known as the "National Park Lady," although her work with GFWC also encompassed forests and gardens, home economics work, international relations, and parliamentary expertise. (She went on to serve as GFWC President, 1924-1928.)
Sherman's passion influenced GFWC's legislative work – our resolutions included support for many individual parks, as well as the formation of the National Park Service itself in 1916 – and the path of our conservation efforts by encouraging our members, and their families, to believe that America's scenic beauty should be preserved for the future. As she wrote in the Conservation Department's "Outline of Work" in 1914, "I wish that every woman would stop to realize that she has a share in the ownership of our [then only] fourteen National Parks. They belong to you and to me and to the generations to come. Let us learn all we can of our natural scenic possessions, and let us share in the work of getting our National Parks ready for the traveler… [so that] the lives of millions of people will be benefited, physically, mentally and morally."
